Ecommerce

Small business Ecommerce is highly competitive field and small businesses need to develop a professional E-Commerce website in order o gain competitive advantage over others.

1. Poor or outdated design

Many E-commerce websites of small businesses reflect a poor outdated website design. It is important for your website to reflect a modern clean cut look and feel. If your E-commerce website design is not professional and the website looks like it was designed in the nineties then it is important to consider re-designing your e-Commerce website. A professional design for your E-commerce website is crucial and the website design task is best left to experts.

2. Not having detailed information on products

Many E-Commerce websites make a common mistake of not presenting detailed information on their product range. A common problem with ecommerce websites, especially small business E-commerce websites , is the lack of detailed information on products being sold on the website. Even if an Ecommerce website has a large product list it is important nevertheless to have an independent product detail page for each and every product. Avoid only one line descriptions for your products. Information on products can easily be found on manufacturer’s website and in most cases they are happy for you to use it on your website.

3. Don’t hide contact details.

Another common mistake with many ecommerce websites is the lack of visibility of the company’s contact details i.e. telephone number and address on the website. Customers often look for this information as it helps build trust knowing that someone will be there to answer questions should a problem arise with the purchase or the product.

It is a often a good idea to include telephone and address on all pages either ion the header or footer. An easily accessible email inquiry form or request call back forms on the website also help build customer confidence.

4. The benefits of buying from your company not clearly evident to the customer.

Another common mistake businesses make is failing to convey clearly via the website the advantages or benefits of purchasing form them. Customers usually research competitors before making a decision.

5. Not having an ongoing search engine optimisation strategy.

Many ecommerce businesses make the mistake of thinking that if their website is there it will automatically attract new customers. No matter how professionally designed your website is or if you website has been created with search engine optimisation in mind; appearing on the first page of Google is not something that will be achieved on its own.

Thousands of businesses compete for first page ranking for any given keyword however only 10 can appear o the first page. In order receive targeted traffic to your website and generate increasing leads and sales you will need to have an ongoing search engine strategy and commission an ongoing search optimisation campaign. Although it is not something that will be achieved overnight, the benefits far outweigh the costs involved.

E-Commerce Update for Entrepreneurs

Trends in Ecommerce are important as billions of electronic dollars build upon themselves year after year - making numerous budding entrepreneurs more money than they ever dreamt they would see! Companies like Facebook, said to be valued at fourteen billion dollars only four years in operation. And yes, that is billion - with a B.

Other companies, like YouTube - might only fetch a mere billion dollars. While many companies still go the traditional route of selling products and services online, and doing quite well judging from the massive increases in online sales, other companies sell nothing at all! They simply invite people to come and share some E-time with their site and collect advertising revenue in the process. Sites like Facebook have people willingly putting their demographic info into computer systems that allow advertisers to target a specific group of people. Want only women age 25-34 who are single Moms and work? How tough is it to hit that exact group with television advertising? But with online databases where people sign up so they can post and share their pictures, stories and even videos, the advertisers know exactly who they are reaching!

There are a million and one ways to make money on the Internet. And more and more would be entrepreneurs are discovering this and cashing in! Take a look at some figures from the U.S. Department of Commerce:

While total commerce went up less than nine percent from 2004 to 2005, E-Commerce, or those little electronic dollars went flying around cyberspace at almost twice that rate, or just under seventeen percent! The most notable number in Business to Business was the manufacturing sector. Up only 9.9% year over year as a whole, E-Commerce manufacturing was up a whopping 27.1%!
But if you think that is something, take a look at the Business to Consumer Retail figure! As a whole retail eeked out a less than six and a half percent gain. But E-Commerce retail was up 22.2 percent! While total retail sales struggled compared to most other sectors, E-Commerce went through the roof!
These figures seem to make it clear that people have become quite content to shop online. But surely there is a preliminary report that would show us how we fare in 2007? Indeed there is, and the numbers continue to amaze:

We can again see that while the total retail sales may only be sloughing along at three to six percent as we compare current quarters to the year ago quarters (last two columns) we see that the E-Commerce retail figures continue well into the double digits, with most of the listed quarters reporting gains of more than twenty percent!

The United States, indeed the world is now embracing all forms of E-Commerce and there doesn’t appear to be any indication of that trend reversing anytime soon. For people thinking about becoming an online Entrepreneur the challenges are certainly present. But one would be hard pressed to name a better time to face these challenges!

There are so many positives in opening an ecommerce business online. For instance your business can be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week and it can be open on holidays even when you are personally enjoying the festivities. Ecommerce is typically much less expensive to start than a brick and mortar counterpart. In many ways it may seem like a no-brainer to rush headlong into an ecommerce store.

However, some of the negatives should also be considered. For instance, your website may be geared to a worldwide audience, but when you launch the site it is simply a little known commodity on the edge of cyberspace. It’s tough to have a grand opening online because it can take awhile for consumers to find you.

So much rests on the rankings of site engines to help ecommerce stores get up and running.

One of the things that consumers like about ecommerce shopping is also one of the things that business owners find most challenging – no personal contact with buyer. Your automated ecommerce solution helps maximize productivity while minimizing direct interaction with customers.

Some sense of contact can be initiated through autoresponders that provide helpful tips and/or instructions to assist the buyer with their new purchase or in understanding your business a little bit better.

Online businesses have discovered ways to present the possibility of consumer input…

1) Business Blog (Bblog) - This allows you to post personal items about the product, yourself and your ecommerce store. For certain customers this provides a personal touch they may still desire. It also allows you some level of personal interaction with consumers.

2) Forum – This allows business owners to read up on what customers are saying about the product. Questions can be answered and elements of the personal touch can be clearly seen.

3) Feedback Form – Allow consumers the opportunity to provide feedback (both good and bad) that will be automatically posted on your website. This can help other customers make a decision because the feedback did not originate with a member of your ecommerce team. When the feedback is bad make sure to respond and if the product truly is not a solid performer make sure to remove it from your lineup of available products. Even unhappy consumers can appreciate your willingness to do the right thing.

Most consumers are happy they don’t have to talk to a sales associate. As a business owner you should also be thrilled that this knowledge provides you with an opportunity to reach out to disenfranchised consumers with a product they need in an environment they are comfortable with. Just make sure your do your best to optimize your website so search engines can rank your site in the best possible way.

Ok so in the past I have seen new ecommerce shopping websites struggle to get many orders. This is mainly due to either SEO or just not being found. Now for any new site SEO can be a struggle, reason for this being simply links can take a long time to build and domain age is a factor in almost all search engines. So what I am trying to say is, use other marketplaces at the same time.

People who are selling on Amazon and on there own site will get guaranteed more exposure than one without. Most new sites all have great products no worse than their competitors they just simply are not getting found.

Ok so where am I going with this? START SELLING ON AMAZON! Its just so simple, signup for a sellers account, make your seller account name the websites brand name. Find EVERY product you have on your website that you can find on Amazon and begin selling. Where possible I reccomend you entering at the lowest price on there. I have found in the past most people on Amazon are looking for fast delivery, brand new and good feedback. Since your a new seller I would try and match the other 2 criteria until you have a good feeback base to go on.

There is simply now where you can loose, you are getting sales and exposure! With Amazon having millions of users, your products are a simple search away from a sale.

Good luck with your Amazon selling!

What is e-commerce?

E-commerce or electronic commerce is a very recent coinage, yet it has managed to make an extraordinary mark for itself. All this has been possible because internet has spawned on us in a big way (and a very pleasant way too). Today we are global villages connected through Ethernet and optic cables. This has brought forward the tendency and theory of trading online. Million items that are geographically inaccessible can now be purchased at the click of the mouse. This and much else have brought E-commerce within the radar of most successful trading method.

How does-commerce help a buyer?

Bipolar access

A buyer gets to access otherwise inaccessible product. At the same time he has the comfort of buying from the peace of his home where he can share the product specifics with few senior members who would not have otherwise gone to the shop.

Comparing prices

He also gets the liberty to compare and contrast prices. Today, big companies offer coupon codes on the coupon code sites and other giant sites like e-bay and Amazon. This can help in buying a product cheaper.

….and the compromise

The cost of car trips and the madding crowd is shoved off. This is why the method is loved by buyers and he becomes ready to withstand poor delivery schedules and card frauds (always go for a company with VeriSign logo)

How does e-commerce help a seller?

A seller gets to compete far better with the bigger fishes over the internet territory. His inventory push-up cost and sales and logistic cost is diminished considerably. This way, he can also look to reach out to global markets. Perhaps an impediment with e-commerce is the fact that sales people cannot use their marketing fluency as they do not meet people online.

Payment processes.

A buyer can look to pay via his credit card. For the purpose, he has to indulge in imparting very private details like the three digit CVV number behind the credit card. This makes it all the more important to look for the VeriSign logo of the seller. This is the stamp of authenticity for a seller. A seller dealing through an online catalog and a third party can receive payment through Google Checkout, Paypal, Moneybooker, Escrow, and checks.

Promotion of website

As a seller, you must have a website handy that might draw crowd in the first go.  No matter how good your product is, the world of visual dynamics wants you to lure your customers through an appearance-rich site.

Hire developers

For the purpose, you can hire web developers who provide your site with great themes, backgrounds, colors; flash pages (though choose them carefully as they are Google-hindering). All this can give the glitz to your website.

SEO guidelines

If you are looking at visitors to sign-up to your site to earn PPC through merchant site, then you must adhere to Google SEO guidelines so that Google siphons and redirects visitors to you. These are your customers and they will help you with your e-commerce.

A easy way of getting plenty of visitors onto your site, whilst building fresh and unique content is to run a forum. This is especially good when you already have a list of regular visitors who can kick start life into the forum by posting and replying to posts. And if you are looking for more tips to a get traffic to my website, then dont forget to check out the blog for more tips!

But why is a forum so good for web site marketing and what are the problems? Well, a forum is just people talking about whatever they want to. You as visitors owner set the topics to be discussed and act as a moderator. Whatever is on people’s minds they can discuss and if it’s on their minds, it could just be on other people’s minds. If they are looking for this then they might find your site!
So how does it work as far as gaining more visitors is concerned? Well every thread that’s started adds more content to the web site that the search engines should index and send traffic to. People posting on that thread will keep coming back to read replies and add further comments.
Sometimes posts will be a little controversial and will attract more visitors - through current visitors sending links to their friends and acquaintances. This is spreading the word of your site to a wider audience.

These visitors might not be adding directly to profit, but especially if you are displaying pay per click adverts then you are bringing in traffic that might be clicking on these adverts.

You are also developing a base of regular visitors. Some of these will sign up for your newsletters, others will browse your site and start to buy products and services. This is the aim! For just the cost of a forum and maintaining it, you have a continual stream of traffic.

You do need to appoint a moderator to watch for posts that go a little too far - but as long as readers can flag posts then that shouldn’t be a problem. Also some people will try to fill posts with links to their sites. You either need to be checking for blatant self promotion or adding the tag rel=”nofollow” to every hyperlink in posts.

There are plenty of off the shelf packages that can be used or use a custom built one. Whereas a custom built solution might not have so many fancy features and can be a bit more basic, it can combine into the site far more effectively. For example, latest posts can be displayed in the header of every page on the site so that every visitor can see what is happening in the forum.
A forum is an excellent way of generating loads of unique, fresh content. With a little work it should really drive plenty of traffic into your web site by increasing the community feel. If you are looking for the answer for how to get more free traffic to website, then check out the latest on the blog.

Get valuable hints for free website traffic - this is your individual guide.

You may have traffic arriving on your web site and they are ticking over making purchases, but how else can you turn traffic into cash? Here are 7 steps that you really should be trying out. And if you are looking for more tips to get more traffic to website, then dont forget to check out the blog for more tips!

1) Display displaying adverts for other web sites. Depending on your site, it may be suitable to carry some advertising. Maybe Google Adsense or banner adds. Google, and similar schemes, have the great advantage of picking adverts most likely to be clicked on according to the content of your website whereas banners, depending on their source, are likely to either be paying a fixed amount for being displayed or be an affiliate banner. With either of these you are left swap the banners - removing those that expire and finding new ones as required. Also, for affiliate schemes, swapping between the best performing schemes.

2) Sell add on products. Look at what they have in their shopping basket and see what other people who have chosen those items have bought with them. Doesn’t work so simply if you are using a third party’s shopping basket, but if it is coded using your own database then you can write a query to show you common selections and if you are a bit cleverer, also display the common selections either with the item or in the basket screen.

3) Sell special offers. Add small ticket price items that they might want to buy. Display them around the basket areas of the site. All you need to be selling is little add on gadgets that don’t cost that much, but if there are enough extra sales, that can make a tidy amount of extra profit.

4) Offer free postage. Take a look at your customers’ average basket order value and offer free postage for a small amount above that. Then watch and see if the average order value increases. The lure of a something for free could just encourage buyers to buy more. Just watch that people aren’t buying more then returning the extra (it’s happened before).

5) Offer special offer items for basket amounts. Again, look at the average basket order values and offer free or discounted goods when the basket total is a little more than average. If most people spend £20, then for £25 orders give a small gift for free. And hopefully watch your sales increase. Just remember to state that the free item must be returned if other parts of the order are returned.

6) Add monthly ‘trinkets’. Have a special low-cost item made and each month make one of these available for higher than average order baskets. Using the same theory as the previous step, but encouraging the people to come back next month to get the next item.

7) Ask your customers to join your mailing list. Then you can sell them more by emailing them of latest stock, current promotions etc.

All are very simple ideas, aimed at increasing sales and bringing in more cash in other ways. If you are looking for the answer for how to get more traffic to your, then check out the latest on the blog.

With the global economy going through its toughest period ever many businesses are having to re-think budgets and costs in order to inspire savings wherever they can to save money. Of all the factors one of the most influential areas to contemplate cost savings is the area of marketing, and one that should be addressed with care. Businesses that make an attempt their marketing budgets run the real risk of cutting off the life blood that brings business through their doors.

Marketing can be misjudged by some people and an area that can often be misinterpreted or misunderstood. Without a good balance of marketing ideas to bring in new customers or fresh marketing to remind existing clients many companies run the risk of becoming invisible, in doing so allowing others to step in and literally pull the rug of opportunity from under their feet.

Despite the economic down turn there has to be a real focus on how you advertise your business and even though these times can be very hard you should concentrate your efforts on value for money yet effective marketing budgets. Many of the older media for marketing are becoming more redundant, particularly many paper founded medias are starting to become inefficient and expensive in comparison to their new age internet and online competition. One of the biggest victims in this area are the directory advertisers who once dominated the advertisers. The simple fact is the internet has made a massive impact on the way people shop for and purchase their products in the modern world.

Elements of media such corporate video production companys are still working extremely well because they have been able to change into the digital age simply because the users have switched from watching film on video or disc to watching the digital version remade into flash or streaming versions, whereas the paper directories are now very much been replaced by online search engines.

Assisting this switch to online media many business people are keen to see their websites appear in the search engine results which in turn has led them to try get their websites improved in order to appear as high as possible in the page results. This increasing demand for search engine optimisation services has also seen a growth in the market place for online web services and for some a great opportunity in making a transition from paper media to digital media.

Which ever market place you are in you will be feeling the effect of the online revolution, whether that be on a positive of negative level. Companies who have embraced the web and its capabilities will, without a doubt be enjoying the benefits of it or at least will be on the right path to staying ahead of the rest. Competition is the soul of business and always has been and there has to be an accommodation for unmistakable change. The internet is a very real and influential change to the business environment and if you havent already embraced it already then you really should re-consider your business position.

ArcBooks

Ok so I have found a website that in a nutshell sells Sheffield Books (United Kingdom). All of these books range from fishing to history. If you are from Sheffield yourself I would recommend taking a look at the selection.

Ok so lets take a look at the design:

Click thumbnail for larger view!

(comment and let me know your thoughts on the site)

Ok so from my observations…

Good Points:

  • Clean bright layout.
  • Contrasting red and white colour scheme.
  • Professional clean navigation.
  • Limited use of graphics.
  • Highly relevant banner.
  • Good structure to content, 3 columns.
  • Very capable eCommerce system (believed to be osCommerce).
  • SEO Meta description and keywords.
  • SEO Titles and URLs.

Bad Points:

  • Some landscape sized books look weird once re-sized into portrait book dimensions.
  • No favicon.
  • Not enough best sellers (I’m sure it will increase over time).

As a whole I give this website an 8/10. With a few minor tweaks it would be better than it already it.

Stick around for some more reviews of eCommerce stores!

eCommerce landing pages are curcial to a websites success. The reason for this is quite simply first impressions a big impression. If you have really thought and planned through the design and layout of your index page you will get more sales than without. This can be done through the correct use of fonts, images and colours. If all of these are combined in the right way you will see results!

Ok so what is an attractive landing page?

Well this is just a matter of opinion, there is never going to be 1 landing page that everyone likes. But you can sure improve the likeliness of someone liking it. With that aside I think in my personal opinions a clean, proffessional and clear look wins. This is simply because less images = better page load times, easier for first time viewers to find what they want and whats there is only what really has to be.

Lets see an example!

Ebuyer Landing Page

I have numbered each section of the page into a breakdown.

  1. Clear header links for key user interaction, normally includes logins/registrations. Don’t add to many though!
  2. The navigation menu I think is same as any other except I personally like the design, it reminds be of the Windows Vista glossy style. This part is designed how you want, but in terms of images I don’t think it should be any more than what you see above.
  3. Landing Banner is a great way in bringing shapes and colours into your website at the same time as giving a message. As seen above they are letting EVERYONE who visits the site they have dropped the prices to match the UK VAT Tax drop.
  4. Special offers are also a very good way to capture visitors attention. If you are having an offer and need them selling, shout about it! Let everyone who goes to your site know. But keep it short and sweet, as you can see in the above example is has a short description, title, price, image and buy now button.
  5. Now we are further down the page the importance goes down, as you can see we are now into just the categories. What they have done here is only show the most popular categories from people buying, this helps a good section of the visitors find what they want straight away.

How can I make an attractive landing page for my eCommerce website?

First you need to see what software you are using, the most popular ones are osCommerce, Magento, Zen Cart in my opinion. With Magento being the latest upcoming platform. Depending on what system your website is running on will depend how you go about changing yours. As far as I know osCommerce has the most modifications to customize your store, Magento has the best features ready straight from install and Zen Cart lies in the middle of those two.

I don’t have a store but I’m thinking of making one!
