Practical ecommerce recently asked 50 industry insiders to share a great, innovative idea that could help an ecommerce firm. Here’s what ten of them had to say.

Check Your Impression Share

“Take a long, hard look at the Impression Share of your paid search campaigns. It’s possible that your ads are not running as often as you think, which is deadly if the campaign is profitable.”

The United States and much of the world is experiencing a large and deep recession that many economists believe is far from hitting bottom. But in spite of economic uncertainty, some entrepreneurs will find the current recession an opportune time to start their own ecommerce business.

A recession is simply a reduction of a nation’s gross domestic product. That reduction means that maintaining a business won’t be as easy as it was, and business owners will need to pay careful attention to how they operate. But a recession is not a cessation of commerce. There are still lots of potential customers who are willing and able to spend billions of dollars each month at ecommerce outlets.

In the fourth quarter of 2008 as recession rhetoric was…

Widgets can help ecommerce merchants display their products on blogs and social networking <a href=”http://www.gchera.org/go/seo“>sites. Many merchants are doing this already, and at least one shopping cart vendor offers a pre-built widget to assist its merchant customers with this opportunity.

ProductCart is a California-based licensed shopping cart company. It was formed in 2001 and its basic, out-of-the-box software costs $695. In 2008 it developed a free widget for its merchants.

The widget is a time-saver for ProductCart merchants who want to display inventory items on other <a href=”http://www.gchera.org/go/seo“>sites. One option to do this is through the insertion of HTML code on the other <a href=”http://www.gchera.org/go/seo“>sites. This code could contain product descriptions and links back to the merchants’ <a href=”http://www.gchera.org/go/seo“>sites. The other option is the…

More than 100 million Americans watched videos on Google’s video sharing <a href=”http://www.gchera.org/go/seo“>site, YouTube, in January 2009, a month when Google-owned web<a href=”http://www.gchera.org/go/seo“>sites collectively served up more than 6.3 billion videos.

All told, Americans watched about 14.8 billion videos in January, or about 101 videos per U.S. Internet user, according to Internet tracking firm comScore’s Video Metrix service. Google’s share of total <a href=”http://www.gchera.org/go/seo“>online videos viewed was 42.9 percent. Fox Interactive Media was a distant second with 3.7 percent, or about 552 million videos displayed to some 61.2 million viewers. In third place, Yahoo!-owned <a href=”http://www.gchera.org/go/seo“>sites served up 374 million video views, or about 2.5 percent of the month’s total.

According to comScore, not only did Americans watch a lot of <a href=”http://www.gchera.org/go/seo“>online …

Most people shop <a href=”http://www.gchera.org/go/seo“>online for convenience rather than customer service. And while inroads have been made into providing better customer service <a href=”http://www.gchera.org/go/seo“>online, the personal aspect is often still missing.

Enter Twitter, a social networking and micro-blogging tool that allows you to send 140 character updates to whoever is following your profile and to the public Twitter stream. Although 140 characters may not seem like enough for meaningful information, you’d be surprised by how much you can fit into such little space. But, it’s the ability to have conversations with customers that makes Twitter extremely valuable to any ecommerce <a href=”http://www.gchera.org/go/seo“>site.

The shipping of products is a crucial function for most every ecommerce merchant and there’s no company more prominent in the shipping business than UPS. UPS has recently upgraded its “UPS Ready” program and we invited Jordan Colletta, vice president of customer technology marketing, to tell us about it. Colletta has been with UPS since 1975, and he is currently responsible for all ecommerce marketing functions for the company.

PeC: UPS has recently upgraded its “UPS Ready” program. What is that program and how can it help ecommerce merchants?

Colletta: “UPS Ready” enables third parties to integrate UPS technology into their applications and web<a href=”http://www.gchera.org/go/seo“>sites so they can make UPS available to the customers [such as ecommerce merchants] th…

As web technology advances and development standards evolve some web browsers are falling behind. Many lack the ability to support new technologies and file types or even provide the best available user experience. These lagging browsers put ecommerce businesses in something of a quandary. How do you offer customers the best possible user experience without leaving some of those customers behind?

In this edition of web Design Tips, a recurring Practical ecommerce feature, I will (1) introduce and explain the trouble with old and noncompliant browsers and (2) describe two ways to manage browser compatibility issues, particularly for older versions of Microsoft’s popular Internet Explorer web browser.

Practical ecommerce counts over 300 different shopping cart systems. In this ongoing “Cart of the Week” feature, we profile a specific cart, asking the cart’s owners and users about its strengths and weaknesses.

Here we profile AmeriCommerce Shopping Cart Software, a hosted cart solution based in Beaumont, Texas. AmeriCommerce offers four different hosted cart packages with varying capabilities ranging from $29 per month to $199 for the first three months. After the first three months, the prices range from $39 per month to $299 per month. There are also several upgraded plans available for large-volume merchants. We interviewed AmeriCommerce product manager Ed Sturrock to tell us about the cart. We then asked AmeriCommerce cart user Br…

I took a long hiatus from “seo Report Card” when my capable colleague Jeff Muendel filled-in for me. But now I’m happy to report, “I’m baaaack.” Our lucky contestant this month is Gosatellite.com. Steven Hutt, echannels director with that company, requested this <a href=”http://www.gchera.org/go/seo“>site grade.

Home Page Content and Title Tags

Title tag, meta description and meta keywords on the home page are all way too long. I’d go with half the length on all three. Meta keywords are of no real value to search engine optimization, so I’d even consider dropping that meta tag altogether.

Also on the home page, all the copy related to each of the featured products is trapped within images. In fact, if you use the handy seobrowser.com tool to examine “www.Gosatellite.co…

Respondents to a February 2009 Practical ecommerce survey collectively use more than 30 different shopping carts, an indication that there is no clear and decisive leader in the ecommerce shopping cart segment.

14.1 percent of respondents to the survey said that they use Go Daddy’s Quick Shopping Cart to power their ecommerce business, while another 10.3 percent rely on Yahoo! Merchant Solutions or Volusion to drive their businesses. But, dozens of other carts are also clearly popular. osCommerce, a free cart, received nearly 7 percent of “write in” responses in the “Other” category. Miva Merchant drew 7.7 percent, while Network Solutions (formerly MonsterCommerce), ProStores, CubeCart, and 1ShoppingCart each received 7.1 percent of th…

Revenue loss from ecommerce fraud rose 8 percent in 2008 to $4 billion, matching the overall growth in <a href=”http://www.gchera.org/go/seo“>online sales, according to a new study.

Although ecommerce fraud as a percentage of total sales was flat at 1.4 percent in 2008, total <a href=”http://www.gchera.org/go/seo“>online sales actually grew so that the absolute revenue lost increased from $3.7 billion in 2007 to the aforementioned $4 billion in 2008, according to the Mindwave Research study conducted for the Merchant Risk Council, a merchant-led trade association focused on electronic commerce risk and payments globally, and sponsored by CyberSource.

The survey also sought to compare Merchant Risk Council members’ rates of fraud loss and transaction acceptance to the rates for non-members.

ACORN Sales Company, Inc. requested that Practical ecommerce review its pay-per-click advertising efforts. ACORN sells various notary public supplies, rubber stamps and embossers. Each month, ACORN spends about $1,600 for pay-per-click advertising across Google, Yahoo! and MSN, paying $11 to $25 per order, depending on the search engine.

Account Structure

I would advise PPC advertisers to maximize ad coverage by constantly updating keyword lists and making sure that all keywords are present throughout the three main search engines. However, ACORN’s arrangement of ad groups and campaigns varies across different search engines. I found about 30 ad groups in Google, about 17 in Yahoo!, and 22 in MSN.

It would be wise for ACORN to ut…

Today with many people losing their livelihoods or in fear of losing a job, there is an increasing demand for information on alternative ways to make ends meet. The latest gold rush is in the <a href=”http://www.gchera.org/go/seo“>online arena where according to some you can easily make thousands of dollars even while you sleep. Many people are eager to share with you (for a price) their latest “secret” to reap untold wealth in just minutes a day from the comfort of your own home. Sounds great doesn’t it? Well the old adage is true here as with anything else - If it sounds to good to be true, it probably is. You need to consider this crucial fact and this is where many lose their way - there is no easy button to build a successful <a href=”http://www.gchera.org/go/seo“>online business fast. It takes time to build any successful business. If there were a way to get rich quick, without doing a lot of work, don’t you think everyone would be doing it?

It’s not that people are not making money, there are many that are. The majority however are probably not though. This leads to some important questions for those who are looking to strike “gold” in the internet era.

The big questions in many folks minds are:

Why start an <a href=”http://www.gchera.org/go/seo“>online business?

* Very low startup costs.
* It can provide additional income, or even replace your income.
* The type of business you can start is only limited by your imagination.
* You can do it from virtually anywhere.

What are the benefits?

* Work from home.
* Be your own boss.
* Flexible hours.
* Unlimited income potential.

What are the pitfalls people encounter working <a href=”http://www.gchera.org/go/seo“>online:

* It is a lot of work. Usually quite a bit more than most people expect.
* It is not get rich quick. Keep your expectations in line.
* To be successful, you need to be very disciplined in your use of time.

Which <a href=”http://www.gchera.org/go/seo“>online Business is best?

* Initially, you want to start with something that you really enjoy and have extensive knowledge of.
* It really depends on you and what you expect from your <a href=”http://www.gchera.org/go/seo“>online business.

What steps should I take to find a profitable <a href=”http://www.gchera.org/go/seo“>online business?

* Do your research. Don’t jump at the first thing that shows up in your e-mail box.
* Run a Google search on whatever offer that you are considering.
* Reach out to people who are already in the business.

How do I avoid the scammers and rip off artists?

* If it sounds too good to be true it probably is.
* Very, very few people go from $0-$10,000 a month in this day and age on the Internet.
* Look at organizations that have been around a while and have documented success stories associated with their product.

If you have heard the sirens call of the Internet beckoning you to come in and have a swim and it seems to be something that would be a profitable venture. Then by all means give it a shot. Avail yourself of all knowledge and information that you can to improve your chances of being successful. Also make sure that you have the self-discipline to carry through your plans. It may seem very easy to do, but it does require quite a bit of work and commitment.

The ecommerce business is partly a numbers game. And the object of the game is to increase your sales and profitability. You need to understand how your <a href=”http://www.gchera.org/go/seo“>site’s visitors are converted to buying customers. Not that you need to immerse yourself in the minutiae of data that many web statistics programs produce, but to reach your <a href=”http://www.gchera.org/go/seo“>site’s sales potential, you need to have an understanding of its key numbers and have a simple method for tracking them over time.

Understanding the Numbers

Here are the most important numbers involved in measuring your <a href=”http://www.gchera.org/go/seo“>site’s conversion rate.

Unique Visitors - This is the number of individual users who visit your <a href=”http://www.gchera.org/go/seo“>site.
Number of Transactions - The number of transactions that get placed through your web<a href=”http://www.gchera.org/go/seo“>site. (Fo…

Affiliate network marketing offers <a href=”http://www.gchera.org/go/seo“>online retailers an effective, performance-based advertising channel with good conversion rates and a propensity to boosts sales. Like many affiliate programs, the Google Affiliate Network connects merchants with a network of web<a href=”http://www.gchera.org/go/seo“>site publishers.

Affiliate publishers place text or banner advertising on their <a href=”http://www.gchera.org/go/seo“>site. If a would-be customer (1) clicks on one of these ads, (2) visits the merchant’s <a href=”http://www.gchera.org/go/seo“>site, and (3) makes a purchase, the merchant pays the affiliate (who sent the customer) a percentage of the sale. No money changes hands unless the merchant closes the sale. So, most merchants can easily afford to be part of an affiliate program.

The Google Affiliate Network makes this connection easy by prov…

Practical ecommerce readers may have heard the <a href=”http://www.gchera.org/go/seo“>online rumblings regarding some intrusive changes Facebook tried to make to its terms of service agreement. The new terms declared that Facebook would retain full license to any and all user content on the <a href=”http://www.gchera.org/go/seo“>site, even when it had been removed by the user. There has been much outrage regarding the new language, and the blogosphere is abuzz with conspiracy talk.

Alarming Language

The language used in the updated user agreement was alarming: “You hereby grant Facebook an irrevocable, perpetual, non-exclusive, transferable, fully paid, worldwide license (with the right to sub-license) to (a) use, copy, publish, stream, store, retain, publicly perform or display, transmit, scan, reformat, modif…

Direct mail marketing is one of the oldest forms of modern promotion, but don’t let its age deceive. Mailing coupons or even catalogs to potential customers can significantly improve <a href=”http://www.gchera.org/go/seo“>site traffic and sales conversions. While the exact origins of direct mail marketing are in question, there are examples of savvy business folk using the tactic more than 200 years ago.

Build web Traffic With Direct Mail

For ecommerce businesses, traffic is king. The more visitors that an ecommerce <a href=”http://www.gchera.org/go/seo“>site receives, the more that ecommerce <a href=”http://www.gchera.org/go/seo“>site is likely to sell. In the effort to generate traffic, storeowners will certainly use several marketing channels and campaigns, and by no means will I disparage search engine optimization, pay-per-click (PPC) advertis…
