Merchant account providers will often automatically assess payment card industry (PCI) compliance fees to all of their ecommerce-merchant customers. However, many merchants don’t qualify for full PCI compliance, and we wondered if some of them are being charged unfairly. We recently asked a PCI compliance expert, Tim Erlin, his views on the matter. Erlin is principal product manager with nCircle, a security consulting and compliance firm and an authorized PCI scanning vendor.

PeC: Does the PCI Security Standards Council dictate uniform fees that merchant account providers can charge <a href=”http://www.gchera.org/go/seo“>online merchants?

Erlin: No, the fees are determined by the merchant account providers themselves.

PeC: If a small business merchant does not quali…

Bill McKiernan founded a credit card payment gateway company back in 1994 when the concept of an <a href=”http://www.gchera.org/go/seo“>online “buy” button was new. Fast-forward to 2009 and his company, Cybersource, is a publicly-traded (NASDAQ: CYBS) credit-card-processing colossus. It acts as the payment gateway for such companies as Avis car rental, Facebook and Fandango, among thousands of other notable companies.

In November 2007, Cybersource acquired Authorize.Net, another early-day payment gateway company. Authorize.Net focuses on smaller <a href=”http://www.gchera.org/go/seo“>online businesses and had grown to over 200,000 merchant customers at the time of the acquisition.

Combined, Cybersource posted revenues of over $229 million in 2008 and recorded over 1.5 billion separate transactions. McKiernan, a …

Although many ecommerce merchants consider Amazon to be tough competitor, some <a href=”http://www.gchera.org/go/seo“>online shopkeepers can boost sales and send traffic back to their own <a href=”http://www.gchera.org/go/seo“>site using two of Amazon’s ecommerce services.

Selling on Amazon and Product Ads on Amazon are two Amazon services that many retail ecommerce businesses can use, taking advantage of Amazon’s brand and web traffic to improve sales. In this ecommerce Know-How, I will describe these services, explain how to use them to improve your business, and point out the potential costs and pitfalls.

Selling on Amazon is Like a Comparison Shopping <a href=”http://www.gchera.org/go/seo“>site, But with More Traffic

If you think holiday marketing begins on Halloween and ends on New Year’s Day, think again. The prime holiday marketing season actually begins on January 1st, and doesn’t stop. For a retailer, gift-giving occasions throughout the year shouldn’t be overlooked. There’s Easter, St. Patrick’s Day, Valentine’s Day and the winter holidays, of course, but every month offers at least one opportunity to market your business for a holiday.

Choose the Important Holidays for Your Business

First identify the holidays you will target. There are obscure and unusual holidays for just about every day of the year, and depending on your merchandise some will serve you better than others. For instance, in August, which lacks a major federal holiday, you …

Back in April 2008, my company launched a new initiative to create a direct-sell opportunity with our product line. We spent some time talking to our development team to create a “shopping cart” for our customers, but found that time and money can be saved by using a shopping cart template, instead. I will admit that we should have gone this route from the onset.

The internet has allowed the public to browse, and buy items <a href=”http://www.gchera.org/go/seo“>online for over 14 years now. The last eight years has really seen an increase in this type of traffic. To increase our dollars from regular foot traffic, we decided it was time to branch out to e commerce. We have a useful web<a href=”http://www.gchera.org/go/seo“>site for general information about our store, and our products, but no real descriptions. We have now come to the conclusion that a total revamp would be better suited to help bring in new customers, while better serving those we already have.

Our <a href=”http://www.gchera.org/go/seo“>site is not a one-size-fits-all type, but one we had designed specifically for us to meet our needs. That is why we considered having a shopping cart built from the ground up so that we can have what we want customized on the <a href=”http://www.gchera.org/go/seo“>site to our liking. When doing something like this, you will run into issues with data bases, and bank systems that become a headache after a short while. Once we latched on to a few shopping cart templates, and really saw the potential with them, we only really had to decide on which one.
As I mentioned earlier, this became a cost savings measure on top of everything else, and one that would have saved us thousands in the beginning had we looked better into what was available. Templates of this sort are not free, or inexpensive, but well worth the costs in less than the first year if all things are considered.

A good system will be able to do many things for you. We needed to capture customer information for buying habits, and future visits. A big need here is that we can either predict an item need going forward for regular clients, or create custom offers based on previous product purchases. It is not enough to get new customers, but to keep the ones you already have.
You need to make sure that payment options, and banking systems all work well together to ensure you receive the revenue generated by your <a href=”http://www.gchera.org/go/seo“>site. We work with a smaller, community-based bank, and therefore had to make sure we met their standards for electronic deposits. It is your money, and you want to go to the correct place every time.

One of the biggest needs for this involved our inventory and product offerings. With an electronic system like this, we wanted our inventory tied to the sales system to let us know product levels. We wanted to group items by brand, size, cost, and other drill down variances and search methods. This would make our ability to quickly meet the needs of the client possible. If we can create a speedy, and pleasant shopping experience, we can create new clients, and further elate our current ones by not having them stand in lines in our store.

The best place to start is the internet to find what you want. There are certainly many brands offered from many companies across the country. Do yourself a favor and spend the time necessary to create a needs list so that you can weigh the options offered by all vendors, and also look at their support to make sure you are able to get going with few problems. I will say this again, there is no need to reinvent the wheel. Do some good research on what you need, and get a shopping cart template to save yourself the time you need to sell more products.

The World Wide web Consortium recently approved new accessibily guidelines. Passed in December 2008, the new “web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.0″ is now the official recommendation for web accessibility for the disabled. This new WCAG 2.0 document, a welcomed update, replaces the WCAG 1.0 W3C (World Wide web Consortium) recommendation of 1999.

This article is part one in a series discussing the impact of WCAG 2.0 on your web<a href=”http://www.gchera.org/go/seo“>site.

The new web content accessibility guidelines are designed around four fundamental principles:

Is it perceivable?
Is it operable?
Is it understandable?
Is it robust?

A document (or, web page) is accessible if it meets all four criteria, regardless of the abilities of the users, the tools they are us…

Never before has there been such an interest in working from home as there is now and this is due for the most part because of the economy the way it is. People are struggling to make ends meet and one option is to look for opportunities <a href=”http://www.gchera.org/go/seo“>online.

The problem is that finding real legitimate <a href=”http://www.gchera.org/go/seo“>online jobs or good instructional methods can be a difficult challenge. They honestly are everywhere <a href=”http://www.gchera.org/go/seo“>online and unfortunately, many are scams. This is where this information and more that I have written will help you better your financial situation.

You are not alone. Many other people are struggling financially but the difference is you are working at improving your situation. Again, I am going to help!
I have discovered ways to bring in extra money and you can do the same. You need additional cash coming in to help pay bills. I absolutely understand so I have put together this information and more to help.

The first step you must take is to read the information. It will not do you any good if the articles just sit <a href=”http://www.gchera.org/go/seo“>online without you, the student, learning these basic, simple steps necessary to start making an income from <a href=”http://www.gchera.org/go/seo“>online resources. Read this information and then, act on it! I will say it again, act on it!

You will benefit greatly if you take advantage of what is working for me. It can work for you and yes, you can bring in some extra money simply working in front of your computer. Does a little extra cash sound inviting to you? It certainly does me and the fact is, this information will get the ball rolling.

Most likely, you have looked into many different methods or guarantees of making thousands of dollars quickly. Unfortunately, these will not work no matter how much effort you put into them. They are not real legitimate <a href=”http://www.gchera.org/go/seo“>online jobs or teaching methods. The bottom line is they are scams and they are everywhere.

The only type of program or method that works <a href=”http://www.gchera.org/go/seo“>online is one that involves proven methods. Combine these methods with work on your part and you succeed. Without those two elements for starters, nothing will work. Additionally, be sure to follow these initial steps now!

1. You must open a ClickBank account for affiliate marketing. There is no cost to open this ClickBank account and it is necessary for getting products to sell.

2. You must open a PayPal account. This is also free and starting an <a href=”http://www.gchera.org/go/seo“>online business or accepting payment from potential employers will involve using this PayPal account.

3. Very importantly, you need a program or resource that will provide real legitimate <a href=”http://www.gchera.org/go/seo“>online jobs or business opportunities or strategies. Look for simple, step by step instruction. If the program is even worth considering, these advantages will be promoted on the pitch page.

4. Read the policies. You will want to be sure that what you are considering provides an easy method of getting a refund if necessary. You should easily be able to find the refund policy, if not you may want to reconsider.

5. You must anticipate and commit to some honest work on your part. You will need to schedule your time and take care of business daily. Do not kid yourself. Anything worth while requires work.

6. Again, be absolutely sure the product you are considering provides good sound directions leading to your success.

7. Make contact with real people using a forum. If no forum exists, try the email contact information. You have to be able to communication with the owner or other participants.

This information will help lead to your success. Understand that these preliminary steps are critical. Real legitimate <a href=”http://www.gchera.org/go/seo“>online jobs are available and if you are willing to do the work, this information will benefit you, act now!

Marketers are known for talking, not listening. That is not to suggest we have not used tools like focus groups, user surveys or other research instruments in the past. It’s just that, in the era of the participatory web, listening is not an option; it is a mandate.

It provides great opportunity to learn at a grassroots level what people really think about your brand, products or services. Indeed, listening to the groundswell of consumer-generated content is the new marketing.

Why Listen

People are talking and they are using the social web - blogs, social networks, wikis, forums, and video - as their mouthpiece. Take, for example, what happened on micro-blogging <a href=”http://www.gchera.org/go/seo“>site Twitter following the Super Bowl. There was an outcry, even a backl…

As everyone is quite aware, our economy today is not doing well at all. Many of us are watching our finances slowly dwindle away. You will find here a variety of simple strategies that you can use to make some extra cash.

These concepts in my opinion are basic and easy to implement but everything is relative. The more work you put into anything, the more you very well may earn. Making money <a href=”http://www.gchera.org/go/seo“>online does involve an effort on your part. Finding legit <a href=”http://www.gchera.org/go/seo“>online jobs is just as challenging.

You need to identify a program or resources that demonstrate techniques or choices that are productive. Many options <a href=”http://www.gchera.org/go/seo“>online probably are not the best of packages available however; they may be more affordable than others are and still produce results.

You can find decent programs at affordable prices. In today’s economy, that rings a sweet sound in my ears. The opportunity to make money <a href=”http://www.gchera.org/go/seo“>online does exist. You just need to find sound, well written, proven options.

These are four basic suggestions you should start with before even beginning the actual earning process.

1. You need a program or resource that does a fine job of detailing ways to take advantage of cash earning legit <a href=”http://www.gchera.org/go/seo“>online jobs or business ideas such as affiliate marketing. Look for clear, step by step instruction. Read everything. For example, affiliate marketing is prospering in my opinion and continuing to grow. Get in on the growth during this economic crisis and prosper.

2. Be sure the product or resource itself allows for an easy method of getting a refund if necessary. Hopefully, that will not come into play but be sure the option is available. Read the policies found somewhere on the <a href=”http://www.gchera.org/go/seo“>site. If you cannot locate them do not even consider the possibility, move on.

3. You will need a ClickBank account for affiliate marketing but the good news is that ClickBank is free to join and use.

4. You should also consider a PayPal account. This is free and as you develop an <a href=”http://www.gchera.org/go/seo“>online business or complete work for employers, you will eventually need this to receive payment <a href=”http://www.gchera.org/go/seo“>online.

Additionally, always remember these basic tips if you want to succeed with a business <a href=”http://www.gchera.org/go/seo“>online.

- Honest work and a daily commitment on your part are absolutely necessary. In order to establish some measure of success, effort must be exercised on your part.

- A proven plan from an established program that has been around for a while is essential.

- A forum providing contact with real people or a live chat is very beneficial to answer any questions you may have.

- Available email contact with a person that represents himself or herself as a coach or mentor is another advantage.

As I stated, you need to identify a program or resources that demonstrate techniques or choices that are productive. There are opportunities to learn how to work and earn money from the comforts of your own home. Yes, there are legit <a href=”http://www.gchera.org/go/seo“>online jobs available <a href=”http://www.gchera.org/go/seo“>online. You just need to pursue the correct and experienced information.

Remember, there are many scams and unbelievable offers available on the internet. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Work is necessary to achieve success <a href=”http://www.gchera.org/go/seo“>online. A daily routine following the appropriate steps will enable you to bring in some extra cash. Take advantage of the good opportunities available.

booklist is an occasional feature where we ask Internet personalities about the books they read, and why. For this installment, we’ve asked David Heinemeier Hansson, the creator of the Ruby on Rails software framework.

Heinemier Hansson created Rails in 2004 while a student in Denmark. He had been hired by Jason Fried in Chicago to write software for an <a href=”http://www.gchera.org/go/seo“>online collaboration program that would assist Fried, who ran a design firm, dialog with his clients.

To speed up the programming of this specific application, Heinemier Hannson created a framework for the Ruby programming language. He called it Ruby on Rails. He delivered the collaboration program to Fried, who subsequently offered it as a service to other companies.

Let’s face it, we’re in a recession. And while there may not be any such thing as a “recession-proof” marketing plan, there are proven methods that will help you capture <a href=”http://www.gchera.org/go/seo“>online shoppers year round. But the USPS lost $2.8 billion last fiscal year. And, for the fiscal first quarter that ended on December 31, 2008, USPS reported a massive $384 million dollar loss—potentially putting the Postal Service on track for yet another multi-billion dollar loss over the next fiscal year.

“We are taking bold steps to cut costs immediately. At the same time, we are examining, realigning and streamlining our business to address longer-term financial pressures while continuing to pro…

Internet use among some of America’s oldest citizens grew 73 percent from 2005 to 2008, significantly narrowing the <a href=”http://www.gchera.org/go/seo“>online generation gap.

While younger consumers, still dominate Internet use, nearly half of Americans aged 70 to 75 are <a href=”http://www.gchera.org/go/seo“>online, according to the Pew Internet & American Life Projects Generations <a href=”http://www.gchera.org/go/seo“>online in 2009 report. Perhaps more important to ecommerce merchants is the fact that 47 percent of Americas older than 72 made <a href=”http://www.gchera.org/go/seo“>online purchases, making them one of the most likely generation to shop <a href=”http://www.gchera.org/go/seo“>online.

“Compared with teens and Generation Y,” the Pew report said, “older generations use the internet less for socializing and entertainment and more as a tool for information searches, emailing, and buying products.”
