Email was amazingly fast when it was new. Instant messaging was even faster. Instant became more powerful with Twitter — you can send messages to an unlimited number of people at once, and those people can receive your messages a variety of ways. A rotating quote on the Twitter.com home page describes Twitter as “the telegraph system of Web 2.0.”

What is Twitter?

Twitter is described at the Twitter site as a microblog. It’s that and a blog on steroids at the same time. Instead of writing a blog post (or in addition to writing one), you type and send a short message of up to 140 characters via the Twitter site, your mobile phone, an instant messaging program, or a third party application. The message goes out to cyberspace instantly and to people who are subscribed to your feed. Or in Twitter language, your followers (people who receive your Twitter updates) can read your tweets as soon as you send them — via mobile phone, IM, RSS feeds, and the Twitter website.

But those who thought that Twitter wouldn’t last appear to be wrong. As with blogs, Twitter has continued to grow in popularity and usage. According to a May 2008 report, nearly 1.2 million people per month had signed up with Twitter in the past three months. Twenty-four percent of users are classified as heavy users, and traffic is much higher on weekdays than on weekends.

Twitter as a networking tool

Twitter allows users to follow other people for short periods of time or indefinitely. It can help users build relationships and develop new ones. You can learn more about people in your network by following them via Twitter, and you’ll have more to talk about with them. When you’re looking for someone for a particular task or job, you’ll be better able to decide whether you want to work with them.

Some ways to network with Twitter:

Publish tips and interesting bits of information related to your area of expertise. You’ll develop more followers and build a reputation as an authority in your niche.

Stuffing description tags doesn’t make a sale. In fact, most smart web shoppers avoid these links because of the gibberish contained below the SERPs link.

There’s disagreement within the SEO ranks on everything. Part of it is due to a lack of reliable science. Sure you can test, but the rules of the game change every time Google tweaks its SERPs.

One point SEOs disagree on is whether search engines give any credence to the content of description tags. In an excellent, un-cited post on HighRankings.com, the writer states:

“I used to believe that the purpose of the Meta description tag was twofold: to help the page rank highly for the words that were contained within it, as well as to provide a nice description in the search engine results pages (SERPs). However, today it appears that, similar to the Meta keywords tag, the information you place in this tag is *not* given any weight in the ranking algorithms of Google, and only a tiny amount of weight in Yahoo’s.”

Conversely,  Danny Sullivan posts on Search Engine Watch:

“The meta description tag allows you to influence the description of your page in the crawlers that support the tag…”

Two SEO professionals with polar views. And, if you want to take the time, you can find divergent opinions on virtually every SEO topic, despite the desire of many SEOs to create a science out of something as amorphous as search engine optimization.

However, the point isn’t which SEO is right and which is wrong. The point is that there is little hard science to back up any aspect of SEO. The best way to determine the effectiveness of description tags is to conduct simple, single-variable testing that will deliver empirical results – irrefutable metrics. Something you can rely on.

Simple A/B Testing

While the focus of this post is description tags, the application of A/B testing is useful in determining which tactics and strategies work and which don’t. There are means for multi-variant testing in which several variables are changed, but if you’re just starting out and metrics analysis isn’t all the fun you thought it would be, stick with single-variant, A/B tests on any changes to your web site. You’ll get understandable, utile results and you’ll get them quickly.

Start by using a couple of top tier keywords in your description tag. These will be highlighted on the SERPs pages as a direct hit. However, avoid description tag stuffing. Bots don’t much care for any kind of keyword stuffing because it dilutes the relevance and usefulness of the SERPs. There’s Bot Territory and Human Territory

Bots crawl the HTML or XML code used to create a web site. It’s all letter strings to these data collector agents. This is where search optimization (designed for search engine bots as the name suggests) takes place. Below anything that will be seen by a human.

Humans only see the description tag on SERPs – but they do see it. Yes, the SERPs were machine generated, but a human is looking over those links now. An attractive, two-line description and welcome will draw many more site visitors than a tag filled with keywords.

4) Offer free postage. Take a look at your customers’ average basket order value and offer free postage for a small amount above that. Then watch and see if the average order value increases. The lure of a something for free could just encourage buyers to buy more. Just watch that people aren’t buying more then returning the extra (it’s happened before).

5) Offer special offer items for basket amounts. Again, look at the average basket order values and offer free or discounted goods when the basket total is a little more than average. If most people spend £20, then for £25 orders give a small gift for free. And hopefully watch your sales increase. Just remember to state that the free item must be returned if other parts of the order are returned.

6) Add monthly ‘trinkets’. Have a special low-cost item made and each month make one of these available for higher than average order baskets. Using the same theory as the previous step, but encouraging the people to come back next month to get the next item.

7) Ask your customers to join your mailing list. Then you can sell them more by emailing them of latest stock, current promotions etc.

Ok so I have found a website that in a nutshell sells Sheffield Books (United Kingdom). All of these books range from fishing to history. If you are from Sheffield yourself I would recommend taking a look at the selection.

Ok so lets take a look at the design:

Ok so from my observations…

Good Points:

  • Clean bright layout.
  • Contrasting red and white colour scheme.
  • Professional clean navigation.
  • Limited use of graphics.
  • Highly relevant banner.
  • Good structure to content, 3 columns.
  • Very capable eCommerce system (believed to be osCommerce).
  • SEO Meta description and keywords.
  • SEO Titles and URLs.

Bad Points:

  • Some landscape sized books look weird once re-sized into portrait book dimensions.
  • No favicon.
  • Not enough best sellers (I’m sure it will increase over time).

As a whole I give this website an 8/10. With a few minor tweaks it would be better than it already it.

eCommerce landing pages are curcial to a websites success. The reason for this is quite simply first impressions a big impression. If you have really thought and planned through the design and layout of your index page you will get more sales than without. This can be done through the correct use of fonts, images and colours. If all of these are combined in the right way you will see results!

Ok so what is an attractive landing page?

Well this is just a matter of opinion, there is never going to be 1 landing page that everyone likes. But you can sure improve the likeliness of someone liking it. With that aside I think in my personal opinions a clean, proffessional and clear look wins. This is simply because less images = better page load times, easier for first time viewers to find what they want and whats there is only what really has to be.

Lets see an example!

I have numbered each section of the page into a breakdown.

  1. Clear header links for key user interaction, normally includes logins/registrations. Don’t add to many though!
  2. The navigation menu I think is same as any other except I personally like the design, it reminds be of the Windows Vista glossy style. This part is designed how you want, but in terms of images I don’t think it should be any more than what you see above.
  3. Landing Banner is a great way in bringing shapes and colours into your website at the same time as giving a message. As seen above they are letting EVERYONE who visits the site they have dropped the prices to match the UK VAT Tax drop.
  4. Special offers are also a very good way to capture visitors attention. If you are having an offer and need them selling, shout about it! Let everyone who goes to your site know. But keep it short and sweet, as you can see in the above example is has a short description, title, price, image and buy now button.
  5. Now we are further down the page the importance goes down, as you can see we are now into just the categories. What they have done here is only show the most popular categories from people buying, this helps a good section of the visitors find what they want straight away.

How can I make an attractive landing page for my eCommerce website?

First you need to see what software you are using, the most popular ones are osCommerce, Magento, Zen Cart in my opinion. With Magento being the latest upcoming platform. Depending on what system your website is running on will depend how you go about changing yours. As far as I know osCommerce has the most modifications to customize your store, Magento has the best features ready straight from install and Zen Cart lies in the middle of those two.

Kezoon is intended to allow anyone to get a free online shop within minutes with a instant installation. From this you will then be able to manage the web store with little restrictions.

Will this be completely free?

Yes, as standard it will be free to open a online store and begin selling products but a % fee for each sale would be taken to help provide the up-keeping of this site.

When can I expect Kezoon to go live?
